Descripción

GABARAPL1 is a member of the GABARAP (GABA-A receptor-associated protein) family, which plays a key role in intracellular trafficking, autophagy, and receptor regulation. It facilitates the transport and membrane localization of GABA-A receptors, contributing to inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. Beyond its role in neurotransmitter signaling, GABARAPL1 is a critical component of the autophagy machinery, interacting with ATG proteins to regulate autophagosome formation and cargo sequestration. It is involved in cellular homeostasis, protein degradation, and stress responses. Dysregulation of GABARAPL1 has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, where impaired autophagy disrupts protein clearance and neuronal survival. GABARAPL1 is also implicated in cancer, where altered expression influences tumor progression, survival, and chemoresistance through autophagy modulation. Its dual role in receptor trafficking and autophagy highlights GABARAPL1 as a critical regulator of cellular and neuronal function, making it a potential therapeutic target in neurodegeneration and cancer.
