Descripción

Cleavage stimulation factor subunit 2 (CSTF2) is a critical component of the cleavage stimulation factor (CstF) complex, required for the 3' end processing of pre-mRNAs through cleavage and polyadenylation. CSTF2 contains an RNA recognition motif (RRM) that specifically binds to GU-rich elements downstream of the cleavage site, ensuring accurate mRNA maturation and stability. CSTF2 interacts with CSTF1 and CSTF3 to form the heterotrimeric CstF complex, which assembles on the pre-mRNA substrate to facilitate the recruitment of other cleavage factors. Its expression is cell-cycle regulated, with levels peaking during the transition from G0 to S phase, indicating its role in cell proliferation and growth. CSTF2 also influences alternative polyadenylation, a process that regulates mRNA isoform diversity and contributes to cellular differentiation and responses to environmental signals. Dysregulation of CSTF2 has been associated with oncogenic processes, such as 3' UTR shortening in cancer cells, which can enhance the stability and translation of growth-promoting mRNAs, underscoring its significance in both normal physiology and pathology.
