Description
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. BCL-2 family members form hetero or homodimers and act as anti or pro-apoptotic regulators that are involved in a wide variety of cellular activities. This protein contains a Bcl-2 homology domain 2 (BH2). The function of this gene has not yet been determined. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants of this gene encoding distinct isoforms have been reported. [provided by RefSeq].

Descripción
BCL2 like 12 (BCL2L12) is a member of the Bcl-2 protein family, which regulates apoptosis by controlling mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization BCL2L12 functions as an anti-apoptotic protein, inhibiting the pro-apoptotic signals that trigger programmed cell death It shares structural similarities with other Bcl-2 family members, especially in the BH domains that mediate protein interactions BCL2L12’s primary function is to protect cells from apoptotic stimuli, thus contributing to cellular survival in response to stress or injury However, its dysregulation can be problematic, as its overexpression has been linked to cancer, where it supports the survival of tumor cells and prevents apoptosis, allowing for uncontrolled cell proliferation Additionally, BCL2L12 is thought to play a role in regulating immune cell responses and influencing the survival of certain immune cells during inflammatory conditions Studies also suggest that it may impact synaptic plasticity in the brain, making it relevant for neurodegenerative diseases where cell death is a major factor
