CD79A, also known as Ig-alpha, is a protein encoded by the CD79A gene in humans. It is a crucial component of the B cell receptor (BCR) complex, playing a significant role in B cell development, activation, and signaling. The BCR complex is essential for the adaptive immune response, allowing B cells to recognize and respond to specific antigens. CD79A, along with CD79B (Ig-beta), forms the signaling component of the BCR, transmitting signals from the antigen-bound surface immunoglobulin (Ig) to the cell's interior, initiating a cascade of intracellular events leading to B cell activation, proliferation, and differentiation.

Required in cooperation with CD79B for initiation of the signal transduction cascade activated by binding of antigen to the B-cell antigen receptor complex(BCR) which leads to internalization of the complex, trafficking to late endosomes and antigen presentation. Also required for BCR surface expression and for efficient differentiation of pro-and pre-B-cells. Stimulates SYK autophosphorylation and activation. Binds to BLNK, bringing BLNK into proximity with SYK and allowing SYK to phosphorylate BLNK. Also interacts with and increases activity of some Src-family tyrosine kinases.
