Background
AGBL1 is a member of the AGBL (ATP/GTP-binding protein-like) carboxypeptidase family, which functions in the post-translational modification of tubulin. Specifically, AGBL1 participates in the removal of polyglutamate chains from the C-terminal tails of tubulin, regulating microtubule stability and cytoskeletal dynamics. AGBL1 is widely expressed, including in neuronal tissues and cardiovascular systems, where it influences axon guidance, neuroplasticity, and cardiac function. Dysregulation of AGBL1 has been implicated in conditions such as retinal dystrophy and cardiovascular diseases, highlighting its role in maintaining microtubule-dependent processes critical for cellular transport and structural integrity.
