Descripción

Apolipoprotein L6 (APOL6) is a member of the Apolipoprotein L family, which is involved in lipid transport, immune response, and apoptosis regulation. APOL6 is widely expressed in tissues such as the liver, kidneys, heart, and adipose tissues, where it participates in lipid metabolism and cellular homeostasis. APOL6 localizes to intracellular compartments, including the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, where it plays a key role in lipid trafficking and mitochondrial dynamics. Emerging research highlights APOL6’s involvement in apoptosis induction, as it disrupts mitochondrial membranes and contributes to cytochrome c release, thereby activating caspase-dependent cell death pathways. Its expression is regulated by inflammatory stimuli, including interferons and cytokines, linking APOL6 to innate immune responses and host defense mechanisms. Dysregulation of APOL6 expression has been implicated in diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disorders, where its pro-apoptotic function may either promote tumor suppression or exacerbate tissue damage. APOL6's role as a mediator of both cellular survival and death makes it a critical protein for understanding apoptosis, lipid homeostasis, and its impact on disease pathology. Targeted studies are underway to explore its therapeutic potential in regulating apoptosis for cancer therapies and lipid metabolism disorders.
