Descripción
SSTR3 is another G protein-coupled receptor in the somatostatin receptor family, activated by somatostatin. It is predominantly expressed in the brain and has a significant role in regulating central nervous system function and neuroendocrine signaling. SSTR3 couples to Gi proteins, which inhibit adenylate cyclase and reduce cAMP levels, contributing to the modulation of neurotransmitter release and hormonal regulation. While SSTR1 and SSTR2 are primarily involved in endocrine functions, SSTR3 plays a more prominent role in the regulation of neuronal activity and the central nervous system’s response to stress and hormones. SSTR3 is also implicated in regulating circadian rhythms and the release of growth hormone. Dysregulation of SSTR3 is linked to neurological disorders, including certain types of epilepsy and mood disorders. Research into SSTR3 agonists and antagonists is ongoing, with the potential to develop therapies for neuroendocrine disorders, neurological diseases, and hormone-related conditions.
