Description

The protein encoded by this gene is a cytokine structurally related to interleukin 10 (IL10). This cytokine has been shown to transduce its signal through signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) in keratinocytes. A specific receptor for this cytokine is found to be expressed in skin and upregulated dramatically in psoriatic skin, suggesting a role for this protein in epidermal function and psoriasis.

Descripción

Interleukin 20 (IL20) is a member of the IL-10 cytokine family, which includes structurally related cytokines like IL-19, IL-22, IL-24, and IL-26. These cytokines share common biological functions in regulating immune responses, inflammation, and tissue homeostasis. IL-20, in particular, is predominantly associated with the modulation of skin, lung, and other epithelial tissues, where it exerts its effects on inflammation, tissue repair, and the innate immune response. IL-20 is produced by various cell types, including monocytes, keratinocytes, endothelial cells, and fibroblasts. Its expression is induced by pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α, particularly in tissues experiencing inflammation or injury. IL-20 acts primarily on epithelial and immune cells to regulate tissue homeostasis and inflammation, making it an important mediator in diseases like psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and pulmonary inflammation.
