Description
Accessory protein for MHC class-II antigen/T-cell receptor interaction. May regulate T-cell activation. Induces the aggregation of lipid rafts. (Microbial infection) Acts as a receptor for human immunodeficiency virus-1(PubMed:2214026, PubMed:16331979, PubMed:9641677). Down-regulated by HIV-1 Vpu(PubMed:17346169). Acts as a receptor for Human Herpes virus 7/HHV-7(PubMed:7909607).

Descripción
The CD4 molecule is a glycoprotein expressed on the surface of immune cells such as T helper cells, monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. CD4 plays a pivotal role in the immune system by aiding in the recognition of antigens and facilitating the immune response. It was identified as a critical component in the adaptive immune system, particularly in the context of T cell function and HIV infection, where it serves as a primary receptor for the virus.
