Description

Oxidizes medium and long chain saturated and unsaturated aldehydes. Metabolizes also benzaldehyde. Low activity towards acetaldehyde and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetaldehyde. May not metabolize short chain aldehydes. May use both NADP(+) and NAD(+) as cofactors. May have a protective role against the cytotoxicity induced by lipid peroxidation.

Descripción

ALDH3B1 is a cytosolic enzyme involved in the detoxification of reactive aldehydes generated from lipid peroxidation and environmental toxins. It is expressed in various tissues, including the liver, kidneys, and lungs, where it plays a protective role against oxidative stress and aldehyde-induced cellular damage. ALDH3B1 contributes to cellular homeostasis by metabolizing toxic aldehydes such as formaldehyde and 4-HNE, reducing protein and DNA adduct formation. Dysregulation of ALDH3B1 has been linked to metabolic and neurodegenerative disorders, where impaired aldehyde detoxification exacerbates oxidative damage. In cancer, ALDH3B1 has been identified as a tumor suppressor in certain contexts, as its activity reduces cellular oxidative stress and inhibits tumor progression. Recent studies suggest its involvement in maintaining redox balance and preventing aldehyde-associated toxicity in tissues exposed to oxidative or environmental stressors.
