Has medium-chain fatty acid:CoA ligase activity with broad substrate specificity(in vitro). Acts on acids from C(4) to C(11) and on the corresponding 3-hydroxy-and 2,3-or 3,4-unsaturated acids(in vitro)(By similarity).

Background

These enzymes catalyze the activation of MCFAs by converting them into acyl-CoA derivatives. This activation step is crucial for the subsequent utilization of fatty acids in various metabolic pathways, including beta-oxidation for energy production or incorporation into cellular membranes for lipid synthesis. ACSM3 plays a role in the activation of medium-chain dicarboxylic acids, primarily expressed in the liver.
