Descripción

ANGPTL8, also known as betatrophin, is a hepatokine and adipokine involved in lipid metabolism, glucose homeostasis, and energy regulation. ANGPTL8 functions as a regulator of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity, working in coordination with ANGPTL3 to inhibit triglyceride hydrolysis and regulate circulating triglyceride levels. It is primarily expressed in the liver and adipose tissue, where its expression is upregulated in response to feeding and insulin signaling, linking it to nutrient status and energy balance. ANGPTL8 has also been implicated in beta-cell proliferation in the pancreas, where it was initially identified for its potential role in promoting insulin secretion and enhancing pancreatic beta-cell expansion. Dysregulation of ANGPTL8 is associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes, where altered lipid and glucose metabolism contribute to disease progression. ANGPTL8’s role as a modulator of lipid metabolism and glucose homeostasis makes it a promising target for the treatment of metabolic disorders, including hypertriglyceridemia and insulin resistance.
