Background

ANGPTL7 is a secreted glycoprotein and a member of the angiopoietin-like (ANGPTL) protein family that regulates extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling, angiogenesis, and ocular physiology. ANGPTL7 is highly expressed in the cornea and aqueous humor, where it plays a critical role in maintaining intraocular pressure and corneal transparency by modulating ECM composition and fluid outflow. Elevated levels of ANGPTL7 have been linked to primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), a condition characterized by increased intraocular pressure and optic nerve damage. ANGPTL7 is also involved in tissue homeostasis and fibrosis through its regulation of collagen deposition and matrix degradation.
