Descripción
ALDH1B1 is a mitochondrial enzyme that participates in the detoxification of aldehydes and the oxidation of acetaldehyde to acetate, a key step in ethanol metabolism. It is highly expressed in the liver, colon, and gastrointestinal tract, where it protects against oxidative stress and aldehyde-induced cellular damage. ALDH1B1 has been linked to alcohol metabolism, and its dysregulation contributes to alcohol-induced liver injury, cirrhosis, and colorectal cancer. In cancers, ALDH1B1 expression is often elevated, particularly in colorectal and pancreatic tumors, where it promotes tumorigenesis by maintaining cellular redox balance and enhancing proliferation. It also contributes to cancer stem-like properties, facilitating chemoresistance and tumor progression. Studies suggest ALDH1B1 as a promising biomarker and therapeutic target in gastrointestinal cancers and alcohol-associated diseases. Its role in mitochondrial aldehyde metabolism also links it to energy homeostasis and metabolic regulation.
