Background
ADCY3 is a key effector enzyme involved in the production of cAMP and is localized predominantly in the olfactory epithelium and brain regions. It mediates odorant signaling in olfactory sensory neurons, playing a critical role in the sense of smell. ADCY3 is activated by G-proteins and modulated by calcium ions. Beyond olfaction, ADCY3 is implicated in energy balance, glucose metabolism, and obesity, as its dysfunction has been linked to obesity and insulin resistance. It also participates in cellular signaling related to growth and development.
