Descripción
ACOT9 is a mitochondrial enzyme that hydrolyzes long-chain acyl-CoA esters into free fatty acids and CoA, playing a significant role in lipid metabolism and energy regulation. It is highly expressed in metabolically active tissues such as the liver, skeletal muscle, and heart, where it regulates the intracellular levels of acyl-CoA and ensures the balance between fatty acid oxidation and lipid synthesis. ACOT9 is critical for maintaining CoA availability within mitochondria, preventing the buildup of acyl-CoA intermediates that can disrupt cellular metabolism. It is also involved in the regulation of lipid signaling molecules and metabolic responses to fasting or increased energy demand. Dysregulation of ACOT9 activity has been associated with metabolic disorders, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and mitochondrial dysfunction, underscoring its importance in systemic energy balance and metabolic health.
