Descripción
ACOT6 is a peroxisomal enzyme that hydrolyzes short- and medium-chain acyl-CoA molecules into free fatty acids and CoA, playing a critical role in peroxisomal lipid metabolism and the detoxification of acyl-CoA intermediates. It is expressed in metabolically active tissues such as the liver and kidney, where it participates in the breakdown of branched-chain fatty acids and bile acid intermediates. By regulating acyl-CoA and CoA levels, ACOT6 prevents the accumulation of potentially toxic lipid intermediates while supporting peroxisomal β-oxidation and cellular lipid homeostasis. Dysregulation of ACOT6 has been associated with metabolic disorders, including fatty acid oxidation deficiencies and lipid storage diseases, where impaired lipid processing leads to cellular dysfunction. Its role in maintaining peroxisomal balance underscores its importance in systemic metabolic health and adaptability during periods of metabolic stress.
