Descripción

ACOT1 is a cytosolic enzyme that hydrolyzes acyl-CoA molecules into free fatty acids and CoA, thereby playing a critical role in lipid metabolism and energy homeostasis. It is expressed predominantly in tissues such as the liver, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissue, where it regulates intracellular fatty acid availability for β-oxidation or lipid signaling. By modulating acyl-CoA levels, ACOT1 influences processes such as energy production, lipid storage, and peroxisomal metabolism. It is also implicated in the regulation of metabolic flexibility during fasting and fed states, as it ensures a balance between fatty acid oxidation and esterification. Dysregulation of ACOT1 activity has been linked to metabolic diseases, including obesity, diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, where altered lipid metabolism contributes to disease progression. Its enzymatic activity and specificity for medium- and long-chain acyl-CoAs make ACOT1 a critical regulator of lipid homeostasis and a potential therapeutic target in metabolic disorders.
