Descripción

ACSS3 is a mitochondrial enzyme that activates short-chain fatty acids, such as propionate and acetate, converting them into their CoA derivatives for use in metabolic pathways like the TCA cycle and gluconeogenesis. It is predominantly expressed in the liver and kidneys, where it supports energy production and metabolic flexibility, particularly during fasting or other energy-demanding states. ACSS3 is involved in the metabolism of short-chain fatty acids derived from the gut microbiota, linking microbial activity to host energy homeostasis. Its activity ensures the efficient utilization of short-chain fatty acids, preventing their accumulation and associated metabolic imbalances. Dysregulation of ACSS3 has been associated with metabolic disorders, including propionic acidemia and other fatty acid metabolism-related conditions, emphasizing its importance in maintaining energy balance and metabolic health.
