Descripción
ACBD5 is a peroxisomal protein that serves a key role in lipid metabolism by transporting very-long-chain fatty acyl-CoA into peroxisomes for beta-oxidation. It acts as a tether between peroxisomes and the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) by interacting with the ER-resident protein VAPB, enabling efficient lipid exchange between these organelles. ACBD5 is essential for maintaining peroxisomal function and lipid homeostasis, with significant implications for energy production and membrane lipid composition. Mutations in ACBD5 are associated with peroxisomal disorders, such as Zellweger spectrum disorders, which are characterized by defects in lipid metabolism. ACBD5 is also being studied for its potential role in modulating inflammation and oxidative stress in metabolic diseases.
