Background
ADAM metallopeptidase domain 5 (ADAM5) is a gene that encodes a protein belonging to the ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase domain) family. This family of proteins plays various roles in cellular processes such as cell adhesion, migration, proteolysis, and signaling. ADAM5 specifically is involved in sperm function and fertilization.In humans, ADAM5 is predominantly expressed in the testis, where it plays a crucial role in sperm development and function. It is involved in processes such as sperm maturation, motility, and interaction with the egg during fertilization. Dysfunction or mutations in ADAM5 gene may lead to impaired sperm function, which can result in infertility or reproductive disorders.
