Descripción
HTR4 is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that mediates the effects of serotonin (5-HT) through adenylate cyclase activation, increasing intracellular levels of cyclic AMP (cAMP). This receptor is widely expressed in the central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular system, and urinary tissues, where it regulates processes such as memory, learning, mood modulation, peristalsis, and heart function. In the brain, HTR4 is particularly abundant in the hippocampus, cortex, and basal ganglia, contributing to cognitive function and mood stabilization. Activation of HTR4 receptors has anxiolytic and antidepressant effects, making it a promising target for mood disorders, including depression and anxiety. In the gastrointestinal system, HTR4 enhances motility by stimulating enteric neurons, leading to its therapeutic use in treating gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and constipation. Research suggests that HTR4 plays a role in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease due to its influence on acetylcholine release, promoting synaptic plasticity. Its pharmacological significance extends to therapies aimed at enhancing cognitive function, improving GI motility, and alleviating mood disorders.

This is one of the several different receptors for 5-hydroxytryptamine(serotonin), a biogenic hormone that functions as a neurotransmitter, a hormone, and a mitogen. The activity of this receptor is mediated by G proteins that stimulate adenylate cyclase.
