Descripción
AVPR1A is a G protein-coupled receptor that is activated by arginine vasopressin (AVP), a hormone involved in regulating water balance, blood pressure, and social behaviors. AVPR1A primarily couples to Gq proteins, leading to the activation of phospholipase C (PLC) and the increase of intracellular calcium, which results in smooth muscle contraction and vasoconstriction. It is predominantly expressed in the smooth muscle cells of blood vessels, kidneys, and the central nervous system. AVPR1A’s role in regulating water retention by the kidneys and controlling blood vessel constriction makes it a key player in maintaining blood pressure and fluid balance. In the brain, AVPR1A is involved in modulating social behaviors, such as bonding and aggression. Dysregulation of AVPR1A is associated with cardiovascular diseases like hypertension, as well as psychiatric conditions such as autism and social anxiety. AVPR1A antagonists are being developed as potential treatments for hypertension, heart failure, and social behavior disorders.
