Background
Tumor necrosis factor (TNF), also known as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), is a multifaceted protein with characteristics of both an adipokine and a cytokine. It belongs to the TNF superfamily, a group of transmembrane proteins characterized by a homologous TNF domain. TNFα is produced and secreted by a variety of cells, including activated monocytes, macrophages, B cells, T cells, and fibroblasts. In its role as an adipokine, TNF contributes to insulin resistance and is linked to the development of type 2 diabetes in cases of obesity. As a cytokine, TNF plays a crucial role in cell signaling within the immune system. Has particular significance in sepsis. In animal models, the use of anti-TNFα treatments has been shown to reduce mortality during sepsis. Furthermore, in septic patients, the levels of TNFα in the bloodstream have been found to correlate with mortality rates. TNF is also known by several aliases, including TNF, DIF, TNF-alpha, TNFA, TNFSF2, Tumour necrosis factor, TNF-α, TNLG1F, and Tumor necrosis factor alpha.

El factor de necrosis tumoral (TNF), también conocido como factor de necrosis tumoral alfa (TNF-α), es una proteína multifacética con características tanto de adipocina como de citoquina. Pertenece a la superfamilia del TNF, un grupo de proteínas transmembrana caracterizadas por un dominio TNF homólogo. El TNFα es producido y secretado por una variedad de células, incluidos monocitos activados, macrófagos, células B, células T y fibroblastos. En su papel de adipoquina, el TNF contribuye a la resistencia a la insulina y está relacionado con el desarrollo de diabetes tipo 2 en casos de obesidad. Como citoquina, el TNF desempeña un papel crucial en la señalización celular dentro del sistema inmunológico. Tiene especial importancia en la sepsis.
