Background
Thyroid-stimulating hormone, also known as thyrotropin or TSH, is a pituitary hormone responsible for stimulating the thyroid gland to produce thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which in turn regulate the metabolism of nearly all tissues in the body. TSH is a glycoprotein composed of two subunits: the alpha subunit (containing 92 amino acids), which shares close similarity with the alpha subunits of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH); and the beta subunit (TSHB, 118 amino acids), which is specific to TSH and determines its receptor specificity.

La hormona estimulante de la tiroides, también conocida como tirotropina o TSH, es una hormona pituitaria responsable de estimular la glándula tiroides para que produzca tiroxina (T4) y triyodotironina (T3), que a su vez regulan el metabolismo de casi todos los tejidos del cuerpo. La TSH es una glicoproteína compuesta de dos subunidades: la subunidad alfa (que contiene 92 aminoácidos), que comparte una gran similitud con las subunidades alfa de la gonadotropina coriónica humana (hCG), la hormona luteinizante (LH) y la hormona folículo estimulante (FSH); y la subunidad beta (TSHB, 118 aminoácidos), que es específica de la TSH y determina su especificidad de receptor.
