Descripción
SLC44A1, also known as choline transporter-like protein 1 (CTL1), is a member of the solute carrier family involved in the transport of choline and other organic cations across cell membranes. SLC44A1 plays a crucial role in choline uptake, essential for the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, a major phospholipid in cellular membranes, and acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter in the nervous system. SLC44A1 is highly expressed in neuronal cells, kidney cells, and immune cells, reflecting its importance in neurotransmission, cellular membrane integrity, and metabolic regulation. Choline is essential in a variety of biological processes, including methylation reactions, membrane phospholipid synthesis, and acetylcholine production in cholinergic neurons. Deficiency in choline uptake, due to issues with SLC44A1 function, can lead to abnormalities in the nervous system and other health issues. In the brain, SLC44A1 is expressed in regions that are rich in cholinergic neurons, which underscores its importance in supporting neurotransmission. Moreover, SLC44A1 is implicated in mitochondrial function and is involved in phospholipid metabolism pathways, which affect cellular respiration and energy production.
