SERPIND1 is a recombinant protein.
Inhibitory serpins have been shown to function in processes as diverse as DNA binding, chromatin condensation, immunoregulation ,apoptosis and haemostasis. Serpins are a broadly distributed protease inhibitors that use the conformational change as a mechanism of action. They are central in controlling many important proteolytic cascades. Phylogenetically Serpins superfamily organized in "Clades", named by letters. The following numbers shows the position in the glade. Serpin named as a SERPINXy, (where X is the clade and y is the number within that clade) many serpins also have alternative names from before this classification was proposed. Structuraly Serpinsare three β-sheets (A, B and C), 8-9 α-helices (termed hA-hI) and the reactive center known as reactive center loop (RCL). Heparin cofactor II (HCII), a protein encoded by the SERPIND1 gene, is a coagulation factor that inhibitsFactor IIa, and is a cofactor for heparin and dermatan sulfate. It is also related in many processes including inflammation, and cancer.
