Background

Inhibitory serpins have been shown to function in processes as diverse as DNA binding, chromatin condensation, immunoregulation ,apoptosis and haemostasis. Serpins are a broadly distributed protease inhibitors that use the conformational change as a mechanism of action. They are central in controlling many important proteolytic cascades. Phylogenetically Serpins superfamily organized in "Clades", named by letters. The following numbers shows the position in the glade. Serpin named as a SERPINXy, (where X is the clade and y is the number within that clade) many serpins also have alternative names from before this classification was proposed. Structuraly Serpinsare three β-sheets (A, B and C), 8-9 α-helices (termed hA-hI) and the reactive center known as reactive center loop (RCL). Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) also known as serpin F1 (SERPINF1), is a multifunctional secreted protein that has anti-angiogenic, anti-tumorigenic, and neurotrophic functions

Se ha demostrado que las serpinas inhibidoras funcionan en procesos tan diversos como la unión al ADN, la condensación de cromatina, la inmunorregulación, la apoptosis y la hemostasia. Las serpinas son inhibidores de proteasas ampliamente distribuidos que utilizan el cambio conformacional como mecanismo de acción. Son fundamentales para controlar muchas cascadas proteolíticas importantes. Filogenéticamente superfamilia de Serpinas organizada en "Clados", nombradas por letras.
