In Humans Collagen alpha-2(IV) chain is a protein that is encoded by the COL4A2 gene. This gene encodes one of the six subunits of type IV collagen, The C-terminal portion of the protein, known as canstatin (biologically active fragment of the collagen alpha-2(IV) chain), is an inhibitor of angiogenesis and tumor growth.The collagen IV molecule is a heterotrimer composed of two alpha-1 chains and one alpha-2 chain. COL4A1 and COL4A2 genes are coding for alpha-1 chain and alpha-2 chain of type IV collagen respectively. They are associated together structurally and functionally with each other.They are the major structural component of basement membranes
