Descripción
The CD4 molecule is a glycoprotein expressed on the surface of immune cells such as T helper cells, monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. CD4 plays a pivotal role in the immune system by aiding in the recognition of antigens and facilitating the immune response. It was identified as a critical component in the adaptive immune system, particularly in the context of T cell function and HIV infection, where it serves as a primary receptor for the virus.

This gene encodes a membrane glycoprotein of T lymphocytes that interacts with major histocompatibility complex class II antigenes and is also a receptor for the human immunodeficiency virus. The protein functions to initiate or augment the early phase of T-cell activation, and may function as an important mediator of indirect neuronal damage in infectious and immune-mediated diseases of the central nervous system. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified in this gene.
