Descripción

PAX7 is a transcription factor essential for the specification and maintenance of skeletal muscle satellite cells, which are responsible for muscle growth, repair, and regeneration. It is expressed during embryonic development and in adult muscle progenitor cells, where it regulates myogenesis by activating target genes involved in muscle lineage commitment. PAX7 cooperates with MyoD to ensure muscle cell proliferation while inhibiting premature differentiation. In cancer, PAX7 is implicated in alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma through chromosomal translocations that generate oncogenic fusion proteins, such as PAX7-FOXO1, promoting tumorigenesis and cell survival. Knockout models of PAX7 exhibit impaired satellite cell maintenance, muscle regeneration failure, and reduced muscle mass. Its essential role in skeletal muscle homeostasis and regenerative biology positions PAX7 as a key player in muscle-related disorders, stem cell biology, and tumorigenesis.

This gene is a member of the paired box (PAX) family of transcription factors. Members of this gene family typically contain a paired box domain, an octapeptide, and a paired-type homeodomain. These genes play critical roles during fetal development and cancer growth. The specific function of the paired box 7 gene is unknown but speculated to involve tumor suppression since fusion of this gene with a forkhead domain family member has been associated with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
