Background
The TMC gene family (TMC1-8) includes transmembrane channel-like (TMC) proteins with crucial cellular functions that can influence ion channels or transporters. TMC1 and TMC2 are founding members and their loss results in hearing and balance issues. TMC1, TMC2, and TMC3 form subfamily expressed at low levels, while TMC4 to TMC8 are more abundantly expressed in various tissues. TMC6 and TMC8 are synonymous with the EVER1 and EVER2 genes associated with epidermodysplasia verruciformis, a recessive disorder linked to susceptibility to cutaneous human papillomavirus infections and related nonmelanoma skin cancers. These genes provide additional avenues for studying the TMC gene family across different genetic and tissue contexts.
