Background
SERPINB6, a member of the serpin (serine protease inhibitor) superfamily, is a protein that plays a crucial role in protecting cells from the damaging effects of proteolysis, particularly in the inner ear and other tissues where protease activity must be tightly regulated. Unlike other serpins that inhibit extracellular proteases, SERPINB6 primarily functions within cells to protect against intracellular proteases, including those released during stress or injury. This protein is encoded by the SERPINB6 gene located on chromosome 6p25.2. SERPINB6 has garnered significant interest due to its implications in auditory protection and various pathological conditions, including hearing loss and certain neurodegenerative diseases.
