Hyaluronidase PH-20 is an enzyme encoded by the SPAM1 gene in humans. It is a member of the hyaluronidase family , which have the capacity degrade hyaluronic acid—a major structural proteoglycan found in extracellular matrices and basement membranes. The human genome contains six genes related to hyaluronidases, with three of them (HYAL1, HYAL2, and HYAL3) clustered on chromosome 3, and the other three (HYAL4, SPAM1, and HYALP1) clustered on chromosome 7. The extensive homology between these six hyaluronidase genes suggests an ancient gene duplication event that occurred before the emergence of modern mammals. Hyaluronidase PH-20 plays a role in various physiological processes, including sperm function and fertilization, due to its ability to modify the extracellular matrix by degrading hyaluronic acid. La hialuronidasa PH-20 es una enzima codificada por el gen SPAM1 en humanos.
