Background

AKR1E2 is a less characterized member of the aldo-keto reductase superfamily but is known to catalyze the reduction of various aldehydes and ketones, contributing to cellular detoxification and redox balance. AKR1E2 has a broad substrate specificity, metabolizing reactive aldehydes such as those derived from lipid peroxidation (4-HNE) and environmental toxins. Its enzymatic activity protects cells from oxidative stress and damage caused by reactive carbonyl species (RCS), linking it to cellular defense mechanisms. While its tissue-specific expression and physiological roles are still being elucidated, AKR1E2 likely plays a role in liver and kidney detoxification processes. Emerging evidence suggests its involvement in redox regulation and energy metabolism under stress conditions. Dysregulation of AKR1E2 may contribute to oxidative stress-associated diseases, including neurodegeneration, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, where impaired detoxification exacerbates cellular damage.
