Serum Amyloid A4 Protein is a recombinant cytokine.
SAA proteins, belong to a family of apolipoproteins found in association with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in plasma. These SAA proteins, consisting of 104 amino acids, are encoded within a closely-related gene family and have remained remarkably conserved throughout the course of vertebrate evolution. Notably, fragments of SAA at their amino-terminal end can aggregate into highly structured, insoluble fibrils that accumulate in what is referred to as "secondary" amyloid diseases. In mice, three acute-phase SAA isoforms have been identified, (SAA1, SAA2, and SAA3). During episodes of inflammation, SAA1 and SAA2 are primarily expressed and induced in the liver, whereas SAA3 sees induction in various distinct tissues. In contrast, humans possess a fourth SAA, known as SAA4, which is constitutively expressed in the liver and is thus categorized as constitutive SAA (C-SAA). It's worth noting that a similar protein, now also referred to as SAA4, has been identified in mice
