Descripción

Neuroplastin (NPTN) is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily and plays a crucial role in synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. The NPTN gene is located on chromosome 15q24 and encodes two main isoforms through alternative splicing: Neuroplastin-55 (Np55) and Neuroplastin-65 (Np65). These isoforms are integral membrane proteins expressed predominantly in the brain, although they are also present in other tissues. Neuroplastin is involved in various cellular processes, including cell adhesion, signal transduction, and calcium homeostasis. Its expression and function are essential for the proper formation and maintenance of synaptic connections, making it a key player in neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders.

This gene encodes a type I transmembrane protein belonging to the Ig superfamily. The protein is believed to be involved in cell-cell interactions or cell-substrate interactions. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq].
