Fibroblast growth factor receptor like 1 (FGFRL1) FGFRL1 is a unique member of the FGFR family that lacks the intracellular tyrosine kinase domain, distinguishing it from other FGFRs. FGFRL1 contains an extracellular ligand-binding domain similar to other FGFRs, capable of binding FGFs and interacting with heparan sulfate proteoglycans. However, instead of activating intracellular signaling cascades, FGFRL1 is thought to act as a decoy receptor, modulating FGF availability and signaling. FGFRL1 plays a role in skeletal development, cartilage formation, and kidney morphogenesis, as evidenced by its high expression in these tissues during development. Mutations or dysregulation of FGFRL1 have been linked to skeletal abnormalities, including craniosynostosis and cartilage defects. Additionally, FGFRL1 may influence cellular adhesion and migration through interactions with extracellular matrix components. Its distinctive lack of kinase activity highlights its role as a regulatory rather than a signaling receptor in FGF-mediated processes.

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) family, where amino acid sequence is highly conserved between members and throughout evolution. FGFR family members differ from one another in their ligand affinities and tissue distribution.
