Descripción
Butyrophilin like 9 (BTNL9) is another immunomodulatory protein in the butyrophilin-like family, with expression detected in various tissues, including epithelial barriers. Similar to BTNL8, BTNL9 is implicated in regulating immune cell activity, particularly γδ T cells, which play a pivotal role in innate immune responses and tumor surveillance. While the precise functions of BTNL9 are not fully elucidated, it is hypothesized to participate in maintaining immune homeostasis at barrier sites by modulating local immune responses to environmental antigens and pathogens. Genetic variations in BTNL9 have been linked to susceptibility to certain inflammatory diseases, highlighting its potential role in immune regulation. Further research is needed to explore its molecular interactions, potential as a biomarker for immune-related diseases, and its therapeutic relevance in immunotherapy and chronic inflammation.
