Description
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGF family members possess broad mitogenic and cell survival activities, and are involved in a variety of biological processes including embryonic development cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth and invasion. This growth factor is a high affinity, heparin dependent ligand for FGFR4. Expression of this gene was detected only in fetal but not adult brain tissue. Synergistic interaction of the chick homolog and Wnt-8c has been shown to be required for initiation of inner ear development.

Descripción
FGF19 is a metabolic hormone primarily produced in the ileum of the small intestine in response to bile acid signaling where it regulates bile acid homeostasis by suppressing cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase (CYP7A1) expression in the liver FGF19 also promotes glucose metabolism, lipid homeostasis, and energy expenditure through signaling pathways involving its receptor FGFR4 and the co-receptor β-Klotho Dysregulation of FGF19 has been linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), insulin resistance, and obesity Elevated FGF19 levels are also observed in liver cancers such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) where its overactivation promotes tumor growth by driving cell proliferation and survival FGF19 analogs are being explored as therapies for metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia
