Background

CIDEC, also known as fat-specific protein 27 (FSP27), is a lipid droplet-associated protein involved in lipid storage and adipocyte differentiation. It promotes lipid droplet fusion, enabling efficient triglyceride storage in adipocytes, and suppresses lipolysis by interacting with ATGL and other lipolytic enzymes. CIDEC is primarily expressed in white adipose tissue and is essential for maintaining energy balance and metabolic homeostasis. Dysregulation of CIDEC has been linked to obesity, lipodystrophy, and metabolic syndrome, where impaired lipid storage or excessive lipolysis disrupts adipocyte function. CIDEC is also studied for its role in apoptosis and its potential as a therapeutic target in metabolic disorders and energy regulation.
