Background

ANPEP, also known as alanyl aminopeptidase or aminopeptidase N (APN), is a key membrane-bound enzyme that plays a significant role in the hydrolysis of peptides. The gene ANPEP encodes this enzyme, which is expressed predominantly on the surface of epithelial cells in the small intestine, kidney, and other tissues, and also in certain immune cells such as monocytes, macrophages, and granulocytes. ANPEP is classified as a zinc metalloprotease, which means that its catalytic activity depends on a zinc ion in its active site. In the small intestine, ANPEP facilitates the final stages of protein digestion by cleaving neutral amino acids from the N-terminus of oligopeptides.
