Descripción
Neutral cholesterol ester hydrolase 1 (NCEH1) is an enzyme involved in the hydrolysis of cholesterol esters into free cholesterol and fatty acids, playing a critical role in cholesterol metabolism and homeostasis. It is primarily localized in the cytosol and is highly expressed in tissues such as the liver, macrophages, and adrenal glands, where cholesterol metabolism is vital. NCEH1 contributes to the regulation of intracellular cholesterol levels and is involved in processes such as lipid droplet mobilization and reverse cholesterol transport. It also plays a significant role in foam cell formation in atherosclerotic plaques, highlighting its involvement in cardiovascular disease. Dysregulation or mutations in NCEH1 have been linked to lipid metabolism disorders and increased susceptibility to atherosclerosis, making it a potential therapeutic target for modulating cholesterol homeostasis and reducing cardiovascular risk.
