Apelin-15 (63-77) is a peptide.
Apelin, also known as APLN, is a peptide encoded by the APLN gene in humans. It serves as one of two endogenous ligands for the G-protein-coupled APJ receptor, which is expressed on the surface of many cell types. The Apelin gene encodes a pre-proprotein consisting of 77 amino acids, with a signal peptide at the N-terminal region. Translocation into the endoplasmic reticulum and cleavage of the signal peptide, the resulting protein, made up of 55 amino acids, can generate multiple active fragments. Apelin 36: A 36 amino acid peptide corresponding to the sequence 42-77. Apelin 17: A 17 amino acid peptide corresponding to the sequence 61-77. Apelin 13: A 13 amino acid peptide corresponding to the sequence 65-77. Ap-12, one of the most potent C-terminal fragments of this polypeptide, exhibits a high affinity for the orphan receptor APJ. Apelin-12 is involved in regulating body fluid homeostasis and plays a role in central control of feeding. Interestingly, Apelin-12 also has the ability to block HIV-1. Other aliases for apelin include APEL, XNPEP2, and apelin.
