This gene is a member of the Ig superfamily and encodes a cell surface sialoglycoprotein expressed by cytokine-activated endothelium. This type I membrane protein mediates leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion and signal transduction, and may play a role in the development of artherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Three alternatively spliced transcripts encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene.
Vascular cell adhesion protein 1, also known as vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) or cluster of differentiation 106 (CD106), is a human protein encoded by the VCAM1 gene. VCAM-1 plays a critical role in interacting with the integrin very late antigen-4 (VLA4).VCAM-1 is responsible for facilitating the adhesion of various immune cells, including lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils, to the endothelial blood vessel. Additionally, it plays a vital role in signal transduction between leukocytes and endothelial cells, and it has been implicated in the development of conditions such as atherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Ectodomain release of VCAM-1 is observed in various situations and is often mediated by enzymes like matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and ADAMs (A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase). This release can be triggered by external factors such as calcium ionophores, cytokines, and growth factors. VCAM-1 is also known by the alias CD106
