Description

Important adipokine involved in the control of fat metabolism and insulin sensitivity, with direct anti-diabetic, anti-atherogenic and anti-inflammatory activities. Stimulates AMPK phosphorylation and activation in the liver and the skeletal muscle, enhancing glucose utilization and fatty-acid combustion. Antagonizes TNF-alpha by negatively regulating its expression in various tissues such as liver and macrophages, and also by counteracting its effects. Inhibits endothelial NF-kappa-B signaling through a cAMP-dependent pathway. May play a role in cell growth, angiogenesis and tissue remodeling by binding and sequestering various growth factors with distinct binding affinities, depending on the type of complex, LMW, MMW or HMW.

Descripción

Adiponectin (ADIPOQ) is a hormone and adipokine whch is produced and secreted by adipocytes. It plays a significant role in regulating several metabolic processes , including glucose regulation and fatty acid oxidation. Adiponectin levels are inversely correlated with obesity. Adiponectin enhances insulin sensitivity, which means it helps to respond better to insulin and regulate blood sugar levels more effectively. Low levels of adiponectin are associated with insulin resistance, a key feature of type 2 diabetes. Adiponectin has anti-inflammatory properties, helping to reduce inflammation in various tissues and organs. Chronic inflammation is implicated in the development of several diseases, including cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome. Adiponectin is thought to have protective effects on the cardiovascular system. It can help prevent the development of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) by reducing the buildup of plaque in the blood vessels Adiponectin also plays a role in the regulation of energy metabolism by promoting the oxidation of fatty acids in muscle tissue and the liver. This helps to prevent the accumulation of fat in tissues.
