Background

ADAD2 is another testis-specific protein within the adenosine deaminase domain-containing family, contributing to RNA metabolism during male germ cell development. It is involved in RNA binding and is hypothesized to regulate mRNA stability and translation during spermatogenesis. ADAD2 plays a key role in supporting the differentiation of spermatocytes and the formation of mature sperm cells. Like ADAD1, ADAD2 contains a conserved adenosine deaminase domain but does not exhibit classical enzymatic activity, suggesting its primary role lies in RNA binding and post-transcriptional regulation. Alterations in ADAD2 expression have been associated with defects in spermatogenesis and reduced male fertility.
