Descripción
Proopiomelanocortin (POMC) is a large precursor polypeptide produced primarily in the anterior pituitary gland, but also in the hypothalamus, skin, and other tissues. POMC undergoes extensive post-translational processing to produce multiple biologically active peptides, including adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), melanocyte-stimulating hormones (MSH), and beta-endorphin. These peptides have diverse roles in regulating physiological processes such as stress response, immune function, energy homeostasis, and pigmentation.
