Descripción
ALDH16A1 is a relatively less characterized member of the aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) superfamily, which plays a key role in aldehyde metabolism. It is thought to function as an aldehyde-metabolizing enzyme, detoxifying reactive aldehydes generated during oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, and intermediary metabolism. ALDH16A1 is expressed in various tissues, including the liver and kidney, and has been associated with maintaining cellular homeostasis under stress conditions. Mutations or dysregulation of ALDH16A1 are linked to hyperuricemia and gout, likely due to its involvement in purine metabolism and urate homeostasis. Emerging studies suggest its role in managing metabolic disorders and chronic inflammation, but its enzymatic activity and substrate specificity require further investigation. ALDH16A1 has also been proposed as a potential biomarker for gout and related kidney dysfunctions, highlighting its importance in purine degradation pathways.
