Background
7-Ketocholesterol (7KC) is an oxidized derivative of cholesterol, formed during the process of lipid peroxidation and enzymatic cholesterol metabolism. It is one of the most abundant oxysterols found in the body under oxidative stress conditions and is widely studied for its role in various pathological processes. 7KC is cytotoxic and pro-inflammatory, capable of inducing oxidative stress, apoptosis, and lipid accumulation in cells. It contributes to the progression of atherosclerosis by promoting foam cell formation, endothelial dysfunction, and vascular inflammation. In neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, 7KC has been implicated in triggering neuronal damage and disrupting cholesterol homeostasis. It is also associated with age-related macular degeneration and other chronic conditions involving oxidative stress. As a biomarker, elevated levels of 7KC are often detected in diseases linked to cholesterol oxidation and oxidative damage. Current research aims to elucidate therapeutic strategies targeting 7KC-related pathways to mitigate its pathological effects.
